Katrin Raynor-Evans will show Exploring Astronomy and Space through Philately

An introduction to the topic of astronomy and space celebrated through philately, including the world’s first astronomy stamps, the global spread of astronomy on stamps and astronomy/space discoveries and achievements that have appeared on philatelic material.

Katrin is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and Royal Geographical Society, Features Editor of Popular Astronomy and a contributor to BBC Sky at Night.

Satellite Meteorology


Since 2011, the American Suomi NPP weather satellite monitors the Earth’s cloud cover, oceans, ice sheets, vegetation and the heat radiation from the Earth’s atmosphere. Named after Ă…land descendant and weather pioneer Verner E. Suomi (1915–1995), the satellite circles the Earth in a polar orbit. Suomi was one of the first scientists to understand the importance of weather satellites for weather forecasts. His Finnish-Alandic parents emigrated to Minnesota in the USA in 1902.

Korea Post issued a set of stamps showing the “Geostationary Korea Multi Purpose Satellite GEO-KOMPSAT”, also named the “Cheollian”. The KOMPSAT or Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite is a series of South Korean multipurpose satellite for reconnaissance, communication, meteorological, environmental, agricultural and oceanographic monitoring applications.

Jeff Bezos’s flight to the edge of space


 Blue Origin launched first crew mission aboard a New Shepard rocket at 8:11 a.m. CDT (9:11 a.m. EDT; 13:11 GMT) Tuesday from the company’s privately-owned spaceport north of Van Horn, Texas. Billionaire Jeff Bezos, Blue Origin’s founder, joined his brother Mark Bezos, aviation pioneer Wally Funk, and Dutch student Oliver Daemen for the successful l10-minute flight to suborbital space.

Sun Science Stamps

 Sun Science Stamps Highlight a Decade of Sun - Watching from Space

To start off the summer, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of stamps highlighting views of the Sun from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. Showcasing a range of solar activity seen by the spacecraft, the stamps celebrate a decade of Sun-watching for this workhorse mission. The Sun Science stamps were issued by the U.S. Postal Service during a ceremony at the Greenbelt Main Post Office in Maryland on June 18.
